Islamabad High Court rejects petition on Asia Bibi

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has rejected a petition asking for Asia Bibi’s name to be placed on the Exit Control List (ECL).

A divisional bench of the IHC comprising Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Mian Gul Aurangzeb was hearing intra-court appeal of Hafiz Ihtesham Ahmed against the single-member bench judgement of the IHC.

The court said it could not intervene in the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court and so no relief could be granted regarding the matter.

Instead it directed the petitioner to approach the apex court for relief.

The petitioner’s lawyer argued that Asia Bibi had committed blasphemy and had been sentenced to death and that the top court might release her so she should be on the ECL.On October 8 a three-member special bench of the Supreme Court reserved its judgement on the final appeal against the execution of Christian woman Asia Bibi.

During the hearing the media was warned against commenting on or discussing the case until the apex court’s detailed judgement had been issued.

A date for the judgement to be announced is yet to be set.
